Vadim graduated from Caltech with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. While there, he worked in the labs of Robert Grubbs and Peter Dervan. He then obtained his PhD in Chemistry from Harvard in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology program, working on developing and deploying new ways to discover antibacterial small molecules and to determine the molecular mechanisms of their biological activity, and he continues work in these general areas as a postdoc. He is interested in biochemistry, molecular and structural biology with a focus on target validation, drug discovery and target identification.

His other interests are collecting ideas from a wide range of scientific areas and using them to generate hypotheses to advance his field and its practical applications. He also enjoys designing and constructing scientific apparatus as well as helping other scientists discover new opportunities and directions for advancing their projects.
