Tyler grew up in San Jose, California, and received his B.S. in Biochemistry from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly SLO) in 2018. As an undergraduate, he interned for Professor George Whitesides at Harvard University, developing low cost diagnostic technologies to detect septicemia in resource-limited settings. At Cal Poly, he synthesized anti-malarial compounds with Dr. Scott Eagon. Now, he is jointly mentored by Professor Dan Kahne and Professor Suzanne Walker, and he studies how membrane proteins in Staphylococcus aureus regulate the cell cycle, cell wall synthesis, and cell envelope stress.
When he’s not in lab, you can find him watching Drag Race, tending to his garden and houseplants, or baking sweets. When he’s feeling adventurous, he explores the cafés of Boston and Cambridge, though he is still searching for the perfect coffee shop. He is also involved with the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU-UAW).
