Shelley grew up in Toronto, Canada where she completed her Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Charles Deber in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, jointly with the Division of Molecular Medicine in the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children. During her Ph.D., she worked on the design of cationic antimicrobial peptides that target multidrug resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Cystic Fibrosis. Shelley greatly attributes her interest in research to Dr. Deber who has been an exceptional mentor in both science and life.
As a postdoctoral fellow in the Kahne lab, Shelley now pursues a study of the proteins involved in the assembly of the outer membrane in gram-negative bacteria.
Outside of the lab, Shelley enjoys indulging in everyday life - cooking new recipes, reading on the balcony, drawing, long walks, and spending time with people.
